Harley project

1977 harley sportster with 1975 iron head 1000cc engine.

Here is what it look liked before i gutted it.

Oil leak coming from the crank case, more than likely the oil pump needs a new hose and a new gasket.  Also paint job is horrendous which will be fabricated later. pipes needs to be repaired and so does the entire engine. Gaskets look like they've been aged with the bike itself.

as you can see i was correct. after removing the oil tank and battery, etc. all hoses were deteriorating assuming that they have never been replaced or at least since the 1980's.

After witnessing the oil pump, hoses and leaks. it left me no choice but to remove the iron head and begin the degreasing and cleaning process.

now that thats finally done, time to move on to the inspection process

after disassembling the iron head ive come across alot of deteriorating gaskets that literally broke down into pieces. its obvious that they havent been replaced in a long time. The casing was also covered in grease and mud which basically devoured the black engine paint on most sides. so will have to repaint engine as well.

This is an after pic, sorry forgot to take a before picture of what this piston looked like. but after brushing it down and using gumout. both pistons now have a cleaner and healthier look.

As you can see after degreasing the casing the paint deteriorated along with it.

After degreasing the engine i replaced all gaskets so far, cleaned pistons and piston rings, check crank shaft (all is good) and piston chambers have been sanitized and engine assemble greased. Piston set back to TDC. be sure to cover the heads so that no debri or dust can enter the cylinders.

....More to come
Next: inspecting and cleaning the oil pump
